The Claws Are Coming Out

We enjoyed a snowy weekend in NC, and my kids were thrilled.

I am more of a sit-inside-and-look-at-the-pretty-snow kind of girl. Oh, and I did some Craigslist shopping while I was admiring the weather. In fact, I almost bought this:

I was going to paint the chairs and recover in a bright fabric.

To replace this in our breakfast area:

This is now listed on Craigslist if any of my local readers are interested :)

I have quickly realized that our family needs a sturdier table that can take more abuse. And, little heads don't fare so well when they collide with the iron chairs (as I now know one ER visit and six stitches later).

In the middle of trying to purchase the new (old) table, my dad called and offered to bring me their dining table when they visit this weekend. (They are in the middle of a big house re-do; who knows what else they are getting rid of?!) I really liked the Craigslist table, but you can't beat free. Right?

My parents' table is an oak pedestal style similar to this:

I have to say, I'm not a fan of the claw feet (my sister suggested painting the toe nails red. . . ) but again, it's free and I can paint it. Here's one pic I found online that I thought turned out pretty well:

I don't know that I'll go white but the paint definitely helps the feet situation, don't you think? Has anybody else painted a similar style? I would love to see pictures.

Oh, and I need chairs. Back to Craigslist.

Don't forget to enter my giveaway from Sofia's Sketchbook! All entries must be received by tomorrow night at midnight.

  1. I think when you add the chairs, no one will notice the claw feet. I can't wait to see how it turns out!

  2. I love tables like that, Ballard and Z-Gallery will always slap some awesome upholstered chairs with it and it just brightens up the room. Of course, I would think painting the toe nails red would have the same effect...

  3. I think it will look great painted in any color. The claws look much better when they're painted (in my little ol' opinion).

  4. I don't know about painting this type of piece...but I do really like it white :) Can't wait to see what you do with it.

  5. I think painting the base black and sanding/staining the top dark oak would look nice. Maybe if you find chairs first you could try to stain the table to match the chairs. Painted table top may be hard to keep nice with the kiddos! Can't wait to see what you decide - and you definitely can't beat free! Awesome!

  6. It's amazing what a little white paint can do! Besides, a free table will free up the budget for some amazing chairs and/or fabric for the seats!
