What's on my mind? Well, since I spotted this image on Holly Mathis's lovely blog, I've been thinking about antique bread bowls. (That's a normal thing to think about, right?)

I always love when beautiful objects are used for every day storage--in this case, for crayons. A few weeks ago, when I went to the Raleigh flea market, the friend we stayed with also had a beautiful bread bowl filled with large pinecones on her dining table. (I didn't get a picture, so I give you this one with lemons instead. . . )

I was excited when I actually found a large bread bowl at the flea market, but was a little deflated when the lady said she could cut me a deal at $249. Yikes! That's expensive crayon storage.
So, my search continues. . . I actually found this Butari tray online at Crate & Barrel and although it's not antique, it's a more affordable (and more modern) option at $60:
Enough about bowls and back to Holly for a second. Do you read her blog? I just love her house. Nothing about it makes me nervous (you know what I mean, right?). It just feels warm and easy to live in.
You can see more of her home and work here.

Emily, I ordered a large dough bowl from a catalog called "Through The Country Door" (Countrydoor.com) last fall. I just received my latest catalog and the dough bowl (referred to as a Windward Tray) is on page 7 of the newest catalog...it's only $39.99! It's size is 25 1/2" long x 8 1/4 W x 4" high....it looks old and was just what I wanted. They have some pretty neat things and I think they are priced very reasonably.
ReplyDeleteLet me know if you check it out!

ReplyDeleteHolly's home is one of my favorites. she's a daily read! Bummer that the bowl you found was so expensive. Keep us posted if you find something better!

Just stopped by Holly's blog and loved it! Thanks for the recommendation.
ReplyDeleteOh, I always love to find a beautiful new blog! Hang in there - I'm sure you will find your soulmate bread bowl soon enough - and I agree, that is expensive crayon storage ! :)
ReplyDeleteThe Nester just posted yesterday about dough bowls - same thing?! http://www.thenester.com/2011/02/doughbowls.html
ReplyDelete249, ouch indeed! I love Holly's blog and her style! Janell
ReplyDeleteHi! Your beautiful blog is a recent discovery that I've really enjoyed exploring. Holly's blog looks like another I must check out - I especially love her numbered stair risers!
ReplyDeleteThose lemons look luscious!
I also love antique bread bowls, though I don't own one (the expense holds me back, too!) But I did discover an eBay seller several months ago - "chocolate-pickles" - and though most of her bowls are just made to look antique, now and then she does sell antique bowls (I bought one from her and was very pleased with it) and her prices are reasonable. She offers new, "primitive" bread, trenching, pantry and other wood bowls regularly in a variety of colors that typically sell for between $20 and $30. She'd be an inexpensive source for a decorative bread bowl in case anyone's interested...

Thanks for sharing such beautiful photos, tips and resources through your lovely blog!
This is the second blog I've read about bread bowls in two days. I NEED one now :)
ReplyDeleteHi Emily, I adore those primitive dough bowls too. Tennille and Co in Atlanta has a fabulous selection of them. They are pricey, but are more in the $125.00 to $150.00 range. They are gorgeous and such a statement piece.
ReplyDeleteI love her blog. Her home is just so beautiful and charming.
ReplyDeleteIt's a lovely home isn't it! :)
ReplyDeleteLove the bowl and I will check out Holly's home - I really like the mix she has in the pics you posted. Have a wonderful weekend :-)
ReplyDeleteI go to Canton trade days in Texas and they cost about $20-$30.. I love changing mine out with holiday decor. I'd be happy to pick you up one if you're interested.
ReplyDeleteI love your blog, Emily, and check it every day for inspiration! Thanks for the referral to Holly's blog --it looks wonderful too!
ReplyDeleteI love her home! Yes, I am more of one to have a cozy home...makes people feel more welcome! Have you also looked at At West End? They have funky items like that. Hope you have a wonderful Friday in dreary Charlotte..makes me want to hunker down and work on projects.
ReplyDeleteI've seen those bowls and admired them but didn't know what they were meant to be used for...thank you. I love using objects for other uses as well but in this case I think I'd actually love to see a beautiful baguette on top...Carol
ReplyDeleteSaw these @ The Nesting Place yesterday...what a classic and timeless idea for year-round decor! LOVE them!

Oh gosh Emily...I see them all the time at Scott's...give me a budget and a size and I will find you one!!! I need reason to hunt for something!
ReplyDeleteYes, I adored the bowl of crayons also ('cause hello, I'm a mom and I'm always looking for beautiful ways to display everyday kiddie-type things).
ReplyDeleteWhen browsing through Target the other day I came across the following item. Be sure to scroll to the bottom to see other wood-related serving items. I'm sure this could be used in a similar fashion as Holly's.

That workspace is seriously fabulous! I love how she styled the desktop, but, I think what makes it extra girly/glam is that pretty gray skirt!
ReplyDeleteThe image of the oranges on the antique bread bowl is stunning too! Reminds of of the south of france!
That desk — holy moly! Adding it to my "desk du jour" folder. Have a great weekend, Emily!
ReplyDeleteLove the bowls and Holly's home! So funny that you blogged about this today. The Nester had a dough bowl post today as well!
ReplyDeleteI own the Butari tray from Crate as well as the matching vase. Love them both. They have a great texture with actual fibers mixed in with the ceramic.
Have a great weekend!

I just found one at Kohls..it was regularly priced at 69.00 and was on sale for $5.99! It a good size and color..not antique of course but it totally works! It was in their clearance section.
ReplyDeleteWow I love those numbered stairs! I always catch myself counting stairs anyways!
ReplyDeleteHaha! I love that you were thinking about bread bowls. Love this home...It's beautiful. The numbers on the stairs are darling
ReplyDeleteAwesome idea for the crayon storage.....Love the antique bread bowls...and I've seen several here in KY at antique shops.
ReplyDeleteI found a bread bowl buried underneath a lot of dirty junk at an estate sale. Needless to say I snatched it up and asked the lady "how much?". 3 bucks!!! Thank you very much. It is not in perfect shape--has a small hole in the bottom, but it is fine for a winter display of pinecones! Love getting deals!! Cha-ching!
ReplyDeleteI remember back in East Germany many farms with such bread forms, then still used for forming bread at home...
ReplyDeleteThey are lovely.
I love those bread bowls! Very stylish indeed!

Love the crayons! I was an art teacher before I had children and I think blank paper and art supplies should always be within reach!

ReplyDeleteThey have great wooden bowls at Target in Mango and Bamboo. The Mango wood ones are not vintage but do have a sort of rustic and distressed look to them naturally and they were only $14.99 or $19.99!!!
ReplyDeleteCanton, TX trade days is the place to get them. I have one I love and only paid $15. It is around 18 inches x 8 inches. Happy Hunting!
