Reclaimed Wood Walls

After years of cringing at the thought of paneled rooms, I’ve been really drawn lately to projects that have used reclaimed wood to create beautiful focal walls.

I spotted this wonderful use of reclaimed barn wood when Jewel’s baby’s nursery was featured in the latest issue of People:

I like this look best when it’s done in small does and paired with sleeker furniture.  Here are some other great examples I found while scanning Pinterest:

(This wall, although such a small space, is one of my favorites done in this Chevron pattern.)

I’m itching to do this in my son’s bedroom.  Of course, by the time I get around to his room, I might be over it.  What are your thoughts on this “new” trend?

  1. Lovity Love Love! I think you're right - doing it in small doses - is key. That boy's room is divine. Love everything about it. Can't wait to see what you decide to do!

  2. I think if you do it correctly, you will not get tired of it. Small doses, like one focal wall are the key. I really liked the more pickled wood...seemed lighter and brighter, but for a boys room, it would depend on the rest of the decor. I say go for it...it's only wood nailed to the wall...you can fill nail holes later on down the road! LOL!

  3. I LOVE this idea as well! I only worry about what you do when (if) you go to resell your home? And by you, I mean like anyone who might do this... Do you see if the buyers like it? I know I'd die for these ideas, but you never know!

  4. I am LOVING this. I tend to like the play between rustic and modern, so this fits my style perfectly!

  5. I love the idea. Our home was filled with it when we bought it. Some we kept, some we didn't. I say go for it. It's a great look!

  6. I agree, gotta add some glossies in there to keep it from being too lodgy.

  7. We just did this in our banquette area. Come check it out on my blog:)

  8. I love it, especially for a boy's room. Although I tend to just "jump" and do a project I love without consideration of how it will affect resale, this one does scares me in that respect.

  9. I love it but I'm not sure if I'd have it at my home. It's a trend and as we all know, it will go away. If you have the money to make it beautiful for now and enjoy it, it's wonderful. But you'll probably will have to change it in a couple of years. If you're okay with that, I say :go ahead"! :-)

But they do add so much charm... that's for sure.

    Have a greta day, Emily!

  10. We just moved into an older home less than 2 years ago and we have a tired looking deck. My husband suspected some water problem beneath it and decided to take it apart! Then, I came up with an idea. Those woods from the deck looked like reclaimed wood and I plan to use them as a focal wall in my son's future bedroom. Of course there will be a lot of washing, scrubbing, bleaching and cleaning up before it will be put on the wall. My idea is to combine a little rustic element in his modern bedroom.

I was inspired by the second picture you have posted as well! So I think you should go for it, too! It will look so gorgeous in the end, I am sure. Great minds think alike?

By the way, I am hosting a giveaway so come by and enter for a chance to win a personalized necklace!

  12. I love it! Adds so much texture and style. The boy's room is adorable! I also like it in small doses with sleek furniture. The boy's bed is simple but soft against the wood backdrop. Just perfect!!

  13. We adore reclaimed would! When added in just the right areas in the right amount the tone of the material and texture has a powerful feeling! Great inspiring pics!

  14. I LOVE it. We have a very small "reading bench" alcove in our living room that I intend to do this with! Our furniture is very streamlined and we'll be removing some of the original hardwoods (our house is 100 years old-- we would keep the originals, but a large part of them are in really bad shape) so I'm hoping to salvage enough to put it on the wall! Hopefully it will warm up our place b/c I really have a problem gravitating to cooler tones.

  15. I love the natural wood look. As long as its not that "groovy" 70's paneling. Also, to me, I like it better when its just as an accent wall, not a whole room. Unless were in a log cabin in the wilderness, that's totally different.

  19. I am a HUGE fan! My only concern is that it's very personal to one's own style. So when we go to sell our house, the next person might think it's aweful! oh well. I still might try it.

  20. I agree...a whole room would be too much. Love the boys room in the second picture.....

  21. Yeah, I think just one wall is all I could handle. The good thing about this 'trend' is that if done right, it's timeless.

My favorite is definitely the second picture!

  22. Go for it! I love the look, it adds just enough rustic to a space to add character. I especially like it paired with the warm neutral colors of the 3rd from the bottom inspiration.

  23. Oh, that type of wall would look so cute in your son's room. Have you done it the same way in the new house as it was in HOF. Adorable.

  24. I love the look of reclaimed wood as well!

I also saw the image of Jewel's nursery in People and looove that wall!

  25. I love this look! I have painted 3 walls of my son's room a deep blue and left one wall ready for a reclaimed look. I am thinking of just going with a wallpaper that has the look of reclaimed wood so if in the future i absolutely hate it i can just tear it off.

  26. Jewel's baby room is unique and I absolutely love the wood in the boy's room. Such a beautiful color. (The pictures after that one seem slightly dated to me.) I would love to have distressed bleached or white planks on an entryway or bedroom wall.

  27. LOVE LOVE LOVE!!! I didn't think I would like these, but then I looked and fell in love. Especially in the boy's room

  32. I love this on an accent wall just to add some interest and texture. I saw it used on a kitchen island in Sarah Richardson's summer cottage and it looked great :)

  33. I was just about to do a similar post. I am also so drawn to this lately. Especially either when paired with a chandy or in a little boy's room. LOVE!

  34. It can be a great look.

But I have reservations about putting barn or pallet wood in a baby/young child's room. First because of splinters. The woods used for barn and especially pallets are not "good woods". Kids are born explorers and love textures, so little hands would be touchy/feely as soon as they could reach it! And no matter how much you try to sand it down, if there is a splinter left, the baby will find it!

My other concern relates to actual barn wood that has been painted somewhere in the distant past. There would be serious danger from old lead-based paint that would have been used at that time.

After a child is old enough to know better than to try to "play" with the walls, that's a whole 'nother story!! :)

  35. I fell in love with the idea when The Antonio Treatment did a cafe with reclaimed wood on the walls--fabulous!! Some of theirs was a chevron patterns, too--that's my favorite.
I think the trend is here to stay and wood is always "in." It is a great look and I agree--best in small doses! I hope you do it!

  36. We just did this exact thing in our bedroom! Except we bought new wood and stained it to look old:) You can see our reveal from a couple weeks ago here! http://imperfectlypolished.com/2011/08/08/master-bedroom-reveal/

  37. I think it would be great in a kid's room. It's funny how trends are recycled in new ways. We toured a home for sale that was decorated back in the 70's and then never touched again (I think) and the kids room had 2 paneled walls. I told my hub I thought it looked like the most updated room in the house ;)

  38. I LOVE it! especially when the wood is lighter, as in the last picture. It adds so much character and such a homey feel. LOVE.

  39. This is a "new" trend? Hmmmmm....the people we bought our house from must have been trendsetters in advance! They did a wall in the lower level family room in old barn wood. Because the ceilings are over 9' tall, they did it only about 1/3 of the way up to visually bring down the height...or at least that's what I think :-) Since I grew up on a ranch, I always have liked this feature wall.

  41. I really like it in that boy's room. I also like the way Sarah Richardson used it in her "Summer Cottage" kitchem. Here's the link to her photos: http://www.sarahrichardsondesign.com/portfolio/project/sarahs-cottage/kitchen
I'm sure whatever you decide will look great!

  42. I think it is a great trend. Especially because you only need to add a little bit (of wood) to a room to make a big impact. Would look great in a boy's room, too!
